Weald of Kent to join the Girls' Learning Trust

We're delighted to announce that the Trust Boards of both organisations have now formally approved the decision for Weald of Kent to join the Girls’ Learning Trust.

This follows the Department for Education’s consent on 26 March 2026 and marks an important milestone in the development of the partnership.

Throughout this process, it has become increasingly clear that Weald of Kent would make an excellent addition to the Girls’ Learning Trust. Engagement with Weald Trustees, parents and staff has confirmed a strong alignment of values, educational purpose, and ambition for young people. There is a shared belief in the importance of high-quality education, strong school identity, and the long-term benefits of collaboration within a trust that is rooted in girls’ education.

The two organisations will now move into the formal planning stage. Subject to the completion of the necessary legal and governance processes, the intention is for Weald of Kent Grammar School to formally join the Girls’ Learning Trust on 1 November 2026.

There is, however, significant work still to be completed before that point. This includes a range of formal legal, regulatory, operational, and governance steps, including staff consultation as part of the TUPE process. These are important processes and will be carried out carefully and properly over the coming months.

Further information will be shared in due course as planning progresses.

Emily Tofield (Chair of Trust Board):

“We are very pleased that both Trust Boards have now approved the decision for Weald of Kent Grammar School to join the Girls’ Learning Trust. Throughout this process, we have been guided by a clear principle: that any growth must be values-led, educationally strong, and in the best interests of young people over the long term.

It has been clear from our engagement with Weald’s Trustees and staff that there is a strong alignment between our organisations, both in ethos and in ambition. We believe Weald would make an excellent addition to the Trust, and we look forward to working together through the next stage of the process.”

Dr Thomas Flynn (Chief Executive Officer):

“This is a significant and positive moment for both organisations. Since the outset of these discussions, we have been clear that any partnership must be grounded in genuine educational alignment, mutual benefit, and a shared commitment to helping students thrive.

Our engagement with Weald of Kent has consistently reinforced the strength of that alignment. We are now entering the formal planning phase, with the intention that Weald will join the Girls’ Learning Trust on 1 November 2026, subject to the completion of the remaining legal and governance processes. There is considerable work still to do, including formal staff consultation as part of TUPE, and we will continue to approach that work carefully, openly, and responsibly.”
