On International Women's Day I thought I’d share a picture of this statue located in my home city of Glasgow.

It‘s known as La Pasionaria, and depicts an amazing woman called Dolores Ibárruri, a popular and fiery politician who was a heroine of the Spanish Republican movement. The inscription on the statue is of Dolores’ own words:

‘Better to die on your feet than live forever on your knees”.

She stands today as a mark of commemoration for those men and women who left Britain to fight against fascism in 1936-1939.
